| Over the years many irreplaceable items of telecommunications history and heritage have been saved, largely with help from B.T. and B.T. Museum. Other sources include Northern Telecom (formally Standard Telephones), Mercury, and private businesses who have donated items of interest from far and wide including switchboards and Private Automatic Exchanges (P.A.X.). Many members of the THG have also have also donated items and funds.
The THG has been a constant source of help, both financial and practical. As TTT at present receives no grants or sponsorship, day to day expenses are met by donations and by Project Team members. At each AGM of the THG over the years a sum of money has been made available to meet larger purchases e.g. the acquisition of the Morris 'Z' van and a unique collection of telephones including two over 100 years old. With such a large collection of artefacts in the Museums care the need for a permanent home and building is paramount. While MKM would like to stay closely associated with The Telephone Museum, they are not yet able to offer a suitable building. They have however indicated that they would be prepared to lease a plot of land to TTT subject to negotiation and contract. It is hoped that The Telephone Museum can be integrated with the BT-sponsored initiative ' Connected Earth' which is currently ( April 2002 ) being launched. Proposals have been submitted to the Project Team. See www.connectedearth.co.uk The popularity of the present displays with the public and schoolchildren in particular is considerable and many expressions of commendation have been received, in spite of the restricted space and poor accommodation. |
