Denmark Street

Denmark Street started as New Road and was renamed Denmark Street. On the north side is a long terrace of cottages fronting the pavement which were built in the late 1800s. On the south side are the. The almshouses which were built by the Rowland brothers who had a large timber works in Simpson Road. At the Victoria Road end, behind Charles Stuart's works was Bevis the Blacksmith. This later became Dunbars, and after the Second World War Charlie Heads (before his move to Tavistock Street) and then A Hurst & Sons, General Engineers. Opposite were Garners the Builders, now M.R. Rose.
