Work Party Organisers Report

Athina Beckett

We have now cleared the whole section of canal at Buckingham down to the Lock Cottage so while we sort out the arrangements for the next step - which will be to re-build the spillweir - the work parties have now moved back to Cosgrove. This is a month earlier than usual as we normally start back at Cosgrove in October.

This year we are working at the Cosgrove end starting near Bridge No. 1, where you can still see the remains of the old bridge. It's always a bit daunting when you return to a site that hasn't been worked on for about 6 months, but once the first work party has made a difference and you can begin to see the wood from the trees (sorry!) and the Buckingham Arm starts to look like a canal again, you can appreciate how much work has been achieved over the last few years. Once again there is a lot of strimming to do, so it was fortunate that we purchased a new strimmer last year. The society now has three working strimmers which will be put to good use over the next few months. The first few work parties have already made a god start and cleared a lot of stubble including the abandoned mattress (where do they come from?).

Don't forget our MADD day on SATURDAY 26TH OCTOBER where we hope we will be 'Making a Difference' again this year.
For those haven't joined us on a MADD day before - this is a chance for those people who don't normally come on a work party to try it and help out for a few hours. It's a nationwide event now in it's seventh year, and everybody taking part receives a certificate. Hopefully I've tempted you to come and try it for a few hours. We will be meeting at 10.00 near Cosgrove Lock so just bring yourselves, lunch and a old pair of gloves and we will supply the rest of the tools needed and lets see if we can beat our record of 25 people who turned up on last years MADD day.

Of course you don't have to wait till the 26th October to join us: just check out the work party dates listed or ring me for details: Athina Beckeft, 01908 661217
