Review of 1997- by the outgoing Chairman, Mike Freeman Spring 1998 |
|
Newsletters and communications for the membership were thin on the ground last year, due to pressures of work and other commitments that have affected many of the Committee members. My thanks have to be expressed to Steve Morley for keeping the membership informed with his Interim Newsletter. The case for restoration of the Buckingham arm moves forward: we have received a positive statement of support from British Waterways for our aims and objectives, and would consider, given the right funding etc, management of a restored canal. Furthermore , they would be happy to join in the formation of a working party - or study group- of all interested parties, to examine the best way to achieve the goal of a restored navigation. This is a heartening state of affairs, and gives impetus to the continued promotion of our project. Last year's water-based activity was a Boater's Gathering, with traditional entertainment in the evening, publicity and sales stalls in the daytime, plus guided walks. It was a far lower-key event than the previous festivals, but given the small number of people available to organise it - and the amount of money it involved - it was a highly successful event. The Society needs extra support on the Committee and associated working-groups. If you are interested, now is a very good time to get involved - with many positive opportunities for progress presenting themselves. Committee work does not have to involve being 'lumbered' - and it can be rewarding! If you are not able to attend Committee meetings on a regular basis, there is still scope for you to help, by, for example, undertaking research projects and writing reports in your own time. Outside restoration groups are showing increasing interest in our project. We have been visited by several different Waterway Recovery Groups during 1997, some more than once. In December and January there were two visits to the Buckingham end of the canal. This outside support is a valuable contribution, and it is necessary that we complement it by an increasing level of activity from within our membership. There are talks to be given, walks to be guided, publicity to be spread, and funds to be raised. Please help if you can. |
