Over the years Bletchley Road School has hosted a variety of drama productions, too many to include on this website. However, we have tracked down a few which might jog some memories. If you remember other productions that you would like to share with us please get in contact. We have chosen the following performances which were all produced and performed to the highest standards:
For further information and pictures of the productions, please click the appropriate links above. The Raja of Rajaput was held in 1924 using children from both the boys and girls senior school . This picture is of the whole cast and the newspaper cutting featured in the Bletchley Gazette, amazingly people were still able to identify most of the cast involved and the parts they played! The Production of 'The Bandolero' a Spanish Opera in three parts took place in 1934 just before 'Education Week' It was an enormous success with the Gross takings amounting to £128, a record for Bletchley at that time, with the total profits amounting to £96 12s. They were going to use the money towards a 'Sound Cinematograph'. The success of the production was amazing considering the senior girls and senior boys attended separate schools at this time. Pictures of the show featured in the Souvenir programme for Education Week. Education Week, which was held from Saturday April 14th - Saturday April 21st 1934, was organised to create an interest in the welfare of the community and to focus attention upon the children and adolescent youth of the area. It was to direct the thought of the people for a brief period upon it's communities education needs. A substantial souvenir programme was created giving information on current subjects and acheivements, a copy of which can be seen at the Bletchley Community Heritage Initiative. All sorts of events took part that week including prize giving ceremonies, open days, Sports days, Educational visits to local establishments, Church services and the production of Carmen by the Bletchley Evening Institute Vocal Music Class, Bletchley Musical Society.
Merrie England was another fantastic production given by the girls and boys of Bletchley Road School from Wednesday July 19th - Saturday July 29th 1944. The problem being that this was held during the Second World War. We are not sure if any photos were taken because of the shortage of film during the war. Other items were also in short supply including clothing (only obtainable using clothing coupons) and greasepaints. However, the school managed to pool its resources to put on a wonderful show, and we can show you a copy of the programme and a newspaper article about the event. ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ by William Shakespeare This production took place in 1951 to celebrate the Festival of Britain 1851 - 1951. At this time Boys and Girls had integrated into one senior school Bletchley Road Modern School.
School reports were an important aspect of any pupils school life, some probably never made it home but here's one that did! |
