ELMERS SCHOOL, OLD BLETCHLEY

Elmers School formerly owned by the Selby Lowndes Family

In 1864 the Elms, Old Bletchley , was the home of Richard William Selby-Lowndes and 1871 this ‘very ancient’ building was demolished and rebuilt as a ‘handsome gabled residence’ and was renamed Elmers. (It was also known in 1903 as Selby House.)

Over the years the Bletchley Grammar school (previously known as Dunmore House School and Dunmore College) acquired many new pupils and eventually outgrew the Bletchley Road premises. The owners, Professor and Mrs Holloway, purchased 'Elmers'. When the alterations to Elmers were complete, there was accommodation for some 50 boarders and 150 pupils. The buildings had main drainage, a water supply and central heating. The grounds of 7 acres were to be used for school purposes. 5 acres was used for a football and cricket ground and the rest for tennis lawns and kitchen gardens.

In 1922, Elmers opened as Bletchley Grammar School (founded 1883); Principal: Sidney Howard Still, MCP.

In 1939 Elmers was subsequently requisitioned by the government, just prior to the outbreak of hostilities, and became part of Station X at Bletchley Park.
