Joseph Collyer (1748-1827) was a prolific engraver making numerous portrait copies. After initial training under Anthony Walker (1726-1765), a pioneer of printing processes in England, he found employment with the publisher John Boydell (1719-1804).

Exhibiting at the Royal Academy on a regular basis, he became a member of the Society of Arts. Other engravings by Collyer after John Russell include John Bacon the Elder. He was appointed portrait engraver to Queen Charlotte and was made an associate of the Royal Academy in 1786.
