For the entire month of August, the Cowper and Newton Museum will place under the spotlight one of its more unusual objects. The object is a Prisoner of War Straw-work Box that once belonged to John Newton. How did prisoners make this sort of highly decorated piece, what materials did they use, and what guided their ideas about patterns? All these questions, and more, will be answered in this month's 'Object of the Month' exhibition. We have put together a display of other eighteenth century straw-work to illustrate the decorative possibilities of mosaic-like patterning in straw and to demonstrate the skills of the Prisoner of War craftsmen. Please join us at the Cowper and Newton Museum in August to find out more about John Newton's piece and see other examples of this colourful eighteenth century craft.
