CASTLETHORPE ESTATE SALE

By direction of the Marquis of Lincolnshire, K.G., the Castlethorpe estate which includes three dairy and corn farms, houses and cottages, small holdings, accommodation land and building sites, and also the Carrington Arms Inn, was offered at auction at the Science & Art Institute Wolverton, on Saturday last by Mr. Marshall Jonas of the firm of Messrs. J. Carter Jonas & Sons, Cambridge. The sale attracted a great deal of interest. Castlethorpe Home Farm, carrying a dairy of 80 cows, and extending to 465 acres failed to get a bid. The Manor Farm had been sold privately to the tenant Mrs. Markham, and at £5,500 the Malting Farm of 147 acres was withdrawn, the reserve being fixed at £6000. A small holding at Bullington End, with house and 40 acres of mixed land was withdrawn the highest bid being £50 below the reserve of £1,600. Leamington cottages and land with an area of about 40 acres had previously been sold to Mr. C. A. Cowley the tenant; and Mr. P. C. Gambell (Newport Pagnell) bought at £200 the arable field and plantation of just over 7 acres at the Bullington End let to Capt. Courage. The buildings and grass land of 13 acres, adjoining Castlethorpe Station sold for £900 to Mr. T. Osborne, J.P., who also bought at £55 the garden and building site of 28 poles in the centre of the village and let with the Carrington Arms to Mr. A. Masterman. Seven lots of grass and building land adjoining the station were withdrawn, and three similar lots on the Stony Stratford road remained unsold. There was spirited bidding for the Carrington Arms Inn, a fully licensed house with stabling, yard, dwelling house, shop and cottage, and at £2,500 the lot passed to Messrs. Hopcraft & Norris, brewers, Brackley. At £1,125 Major Anderson, of Woburn Sands, bought the residence and grounds, known as “The Retreat,” let at £40 per year to Mrs. McLeay. “The Holmstead,” let to Mrs. Cannon at £35 per year, had been sold privately to the tenant. Mr. W. Smith bought the dwelling house, garden and orchard situate in the village opposite “The Holmstaed” for £810. Mrs. W. D. Markham was the purchaser of the dwelling house and garden 33 poles, at the upset price of £300. At £110 Mr. Chandler, Hanslope, bought the 3 acre grass close fronting the Forest road at Salsey Green; and Mr. H. King, Hanslope, bought the grass plot of 1r 32p. fronting the Forest road.
