Michael and Maurice were evacuated to Castlethorpe in 1939, having first been evacuated to Dorset. When their mother Doris, went to visit them in Dorset, she didn't think they were being cared for properly so took them both back to London with her. As it was still dangerous for the two boys to remain in London, they were then evacuated to Castlethorpe. They first lived with Jesse & Margaret Nichols who lived next to the school in North Street, later moving to live with Rose Smith at Sunnyside Farm along with their mother. Michael seems to have caused a further move from Sunnyside Farm when he was leaving through the gates of the farm with the milk float, from which he was to deliver from around the village for Mrs. Smith. As he was doing so tipped a crate of milk out of the back of the float, Mrs. Smith saw this and chased him around the village, but failed to catch him (fortunately Mike could run faster than Rose). After this episode the family moved to live with Mr. & Mrs. Frank Sawbridge. The family later moved to live at Lower Lodge Farm, living next door to Mr. & Mrs. Cook in a semi-detached house that was in a field, which was on the opposite side of the railway track to the farm. Mick and Doris Paris sen. later moved to 24, Pretoria Terrace, Castlethorpe.

While Mike was attending Castlethorpe School he was given the job as ink monitor. One day as Mike aged 12, was carrying the ink wells through a swing door, he ran into a girl, spilling the ink. For this he was given the cane. (another spillage!)
In 1948 Mike got a job as an apprentice motor mechanic with Sellicks at New Bradwell.
