Akela welcomed the many Cub Scout parents present and explained that they were to see and experience a typical Pack Night that their sons experienced in their cub scout life.
After Grand Howl, two parents helped Bagheera carry out the inspection and Baloo collected the subscriptions with the aid of two other parents. The parents then watched their sons burn off excess energy with a game called ‘Horseshoe Rush’.
The cub scouts then dispersed to carry out Arrow work in their groups, Bronze cooked sausages on an open fire with Akela, Silver were involved with Secret Codes instructed by Bagheera and Myles and Baloo demonstrated Scientific Experiments to the Gold cub scouts. Parents were invited to walk around to the activities and in many cases helped the Leaders in the training. During this time Mrs. Coles served coffee to the parents, when they sat still for long enough.
The cub scouts then too part in a ‘YES and NO’ relay whilst Bagheera and Myles laid 4 coloured matchstick trails in the Recreation Ground. The sixes went off to follow their own six trail escorted by parents. On returning to the headquarters the beaming faces of the cubs could be seen clutching lollipops they had found had found on the end of trails, but some parents looked disappointed that only the cubs had received lollipops.
A game of ‘Rush Hour’ was then played with lots of laughter from the supporting parents. This game was then followed by ‘In the Pond’ when both cubs and parents participated with Baloo trying his best to outwit the players.
We then took part in a Camp Fire singing ‘On Top of Spaghetti’ ‘Gin Gang Gooli’ ‘If you’re happy and you know it’ and ‘Kum ba yah’. A short stunt was enacted by the Sixers and Akela which raised laughter, but the Camp Fire was enjoyed by all and was a great climax to a wonderful evening.
After Grand Howl cubs and parents departed in high spirits, cubs proud of what they had shown to their parents and parents were more knowledgeable about Scouting.
