Visit to Quarries District Camp Site

Met at 9.0 a.m. at the Headquarters

After arriving at the Quarries and selecting our camp site for the day’s activities we all worked together to set up the camp. We started the day’s fun with a Wide Game called ‘Relieve Siege at the Fort’ and followed this hectic game with ‘Vanishing Post Box’. We all returned to the camp site for mid morning refreshments whilst Akela and Kaa set up ‘Direction Trail’ around the Quarries. Each Six in turn then followed the trail but because of an unhelpful Cub Scout from another party, new posts had to be quickly put into position before the whole game became spoilt.

We all then sat down to enjoy Kaa’s lunch of fish fingers - new potatoes - beans and Swiss roll - custard. Thus satisfied we cleared away before the Sixes each followed their own ‘Coloured Match Stick Trail’ which ended with a packet of sweets hung from a tree. A game of ‘Water Transfer’ followed with the main theme being that the Cub Scouts had to stalk into the area containing the bowls without being seen by the Leaders. During ‘Blind man’s Trail’ oranges were served to the dry-mouthed Cub Scouts. The now weary Leaders then had to defend in a game of ‘Attacking the Line’ from the now rejuvenated Cub Scouts.

Baloo had really been working hard in preparing the equipment in readiness for departure so we decided he deserved a game of cricket. After the Sixes had competed against each other the Leaders tried to score more than the 4 Sixes combined totals. The Cub Scouts defeated the more stylish Leaders but it must be said that the wicket had definitely deteriorated by this time.

We then all departed from the Quarries at 5.10 to return to the Headquarters for an excellent tea provided by the ladies of the Group Council. At 6.0 p.m. the parents arrived to see the photographs taken of the Peak District Trip and to watch the humorous film at the now famous Football Match.

The splendid day ended at 7.30 p.m. with the party leaving for their homes tired but in excellent spirits.
