Ramble to Stoke Bruerne

Cubs and Leaders outside the entrance to Blisworth Tunnel
Cubs and Leaders outside the entrance to Blisworth Tunnel

Met at 9.30a.m. Headquarters

The Party was transported to Roade by Parents where we started our ramble on a sunny morning but with a coolish wind. We walked on a bridleway towards the Blisworth road, spotting a hare racing across an open field. Having crossed the Blisworth road we saw the spoil heaps from the Canal Tunnel excavations and the chimneys on the air shafts.

Retracing our route we walked towards the Grand Union Canal where it entered the Blisworth Tunnel meeting Mr. Ashcroft on the way. We then made a detour to play a game of Rounders in Stoke Bruerne Recreation Ground. White and Green Six played against Yellow and Blue although some good clean hitting was seen the fielding was once again up to the usual standard – diabolical. Owing to the dismal fielding the game took longer to finish than was planned and we had to set out at a brisk pace to return to the Blisworth Tunnel entrance.

Mr. Ashcroft took photographs of the party at the Tunnel entrance before we made our way along the towpath to the Waterways Museum at Stoke Bruerne. Some of the Parents had already arrived to take us home so we had a short but interesting visit to the Museum. The exhibits and photographs explained the Canal history and way of life of the working canal boatmen.

We arrived home in Parent’s cars after a very enjoyable and instructive ramble.
