Pack Visit to Castlethorpe Mill

After subs, Grand Howl and Inspection we travelled to Castlethorpe Mill and were greeted by Mr. and Mrs. Young the owners. During one of our Way Marking walks in December 1987 we had passed by the Mill where we met Mr. and Mrs. Young who invited us to look around the Mill when the whole Pack were present.

We viewed the Mill Pond with its many ducks and a nesting swan before entering the renovated Mill. We enjoyed a tour of the building and at each room Mr. Young explained how it would have looked in its working days. He told us the Mill had been mentioned in the Dooms Day Book so it was at least 1000 years old. Many of the beams were original and part of the workings could still be seen. A great many historic items were displayed around the house either from the original Mill or items Mr. Young had found around the area whist engaged in his building work.

We departed in good time to return to the Headquarters for the Going Up Ceremony to the Troop. A very interesting visit was enjoyed by all and we had been made most welcome by Mr. and Mrs. Young who had given us an instructive glimpse into the past.
