WICKEN v. CASTLETHORPE

In splendid weather the above teams played at Wicken on Saturday last.

Teams: Wicken: W. Atkins, A. Robinson, A. Barby, H. Toombs, E. Gray, A. Warner, C. Barby, C. Tirrell, E. Read, A. Holton, D. Shakeshaft.

Castlethorpe: A. Lowe, J. Martyr, C. Harding, J. Panter, A. Bavington, W. Lickorish, C. Watts, W. Markham, W. Compton, W. Lansberry, W. Manning.

The opening stages of the game saw both teams pressing in turn, but neither goalkeeper was seriously troubled, owing to poor shooting. After a time the visitors forwards began to trouble the home defence, and several good shots were well saved by Atkins. Tirrell for the homesters, broke away on the right, and taking the ball to within 6 yards of goal, should easily have scored, but his shot went wide. From the goal kick the visiting forwards took the ball down the field, and Watts hit the upright with a terrific drive. Just before half-time Atkins was beaten by a ground shot from Compton.

Castlethorpe 1, Wicken 0.

After the interval, the visitors played with more dash, and soon increased their lead through Manning. Two more goals were soon added, Lansberry and Compton beating Atkins. The homesters now tried one or two long shots, only to find Lowe in fine form. The ball was taken back to the other end, and a pass from Lansberry enabled Manning to score the visitor’s fifth goal.

Almost on time, Tirrell, breaking away scored the homesters only goal with a fine cross shot. Result Castlethorpe 5; Wicken 1.

Both teams are at home on Saturday next, Wicken entertaining Buckingham United, and Castlethorpe meet Weston Underwood.
