CASTLETHORPE v. BUCKINGHAM UNITED
On Saturday last Castlethorpe entertained Buckingham United. In splendid weather the teams took the field as follows:-
Buckingham United: W. Sear, P. Butcher, E. Colegrove, J. Swain, W. Cubbage, H. Stanley, A. Bussy, V. White, H. White, G. Tirrell, and T. Tooley.
Castlethorpe: J. Panter, T. Powell, T. Herbert, G. May, A. Bavington, J. Taylor, C. Watts, W. Manning, W. Markham, A. Burbidge,, W. Compton.
The home captain winning the toss, decided to kick with the wind, and during the opening stages, the visitors goal had several narrow escapes. After ten minutes play Manning opened the scoring for the homesters. The reverse resulted in the visitors breaking away and forcing a corner, which was spoilt. From the goal kick the homesters’ left wing forced a corner, which, splendidly placed, Markham headed through. A few minutes later the home team, after splendid combination, increased their lead through Compton. The visitors appealed for offside, but it was not gained. Play then remained in mid-field until half-time arrived, with the score: Castlethorpe 3, Buckingham United, 0.
Upon resuming the visitors played better football, and several attacks were spoilt by erratic shooting. Manning then scored the forth goal for the homesters.
Directly afterwards, Cubbage, in trying to clear a shot from Burbidge, put through his own goal. From the restart Tirrell broke away and centred for White to shoot behind. Play remained in the home half until the last minute, when Compton, breaking away on the left, scored from twenty yards range with the last kick of the match. Thus an interesting game ended with homesters easy winners. Castlethorpe 6, Buckingham United ).
