Nov 11th Copy of Report
By Mr Bloxidge H.M.I.
The Head Mistress has now completed rather more than two years in charge of this school, and during that time she has had the disappointment of seeing the numbers on the roll fall by one-third. While there is much to show as a result of her efforts, especially in the improved quality of the Written Exercises and in the greater freedom and accuracy of the Oral Response, there is still much to be done before the general condition of the School can be said to be wholly satisfactory.
So far as it exists the Scheme of Work is generally suitable, but the revision now proceeding should be completed as soon as possible, and the various sections should be set out in such detail as to leave no uncertainty in regard to the ground to be covered by each class.
It is pleasing to note that the older children are working for the most part at their own pace in Arithmetic, but there appears to be some danger that, in pressing forward, the need for consolidation may be overlooked. This is evident from the results of the tests set at the visit, though it should also be said that much of the work was done with confidence and accuracy. Handwriting and Composition are highly commendable; Reading and Recitation are weak in enunciation, though satisfactory in other respects. Drawing, Handwork and the Oral Subjects have their points of merit, but the scope and methods of the teaching of Music need reconsideration.
Although somewhat improved in this respect, the children are still talkative both at changes of lessons and while actually at work.
The Infants are making better progress under their new Teacher, but Reading is still a weak subject in this part of the school.
Generally it may be said that the school is being conducted with energy and goodwill. The Head Mistress is fully aware of the remaining weaknesses, and as she is in agreement with the suggestions offers for remedying them, there is reason to expect that steady progress will be made towards complete efficiency
