Can anyone tell me where Malt Mill Lane is or was? The 1911 census has it included in Tathall End. Am I right in thinking that Tathall End is on Newport Road just over a mile east of Hanslope? If so, why does a photo of a building at 31 Castlethorpe Road come up on the 1911 census for Thomas Kingston when it appears to be at the opposite end of Hanslope?
Also, would the building that is currently at 31 Castlethorpe Road be the same as in 1950? This is the address given as Rosie Kingston's abode at the time of her death in 1950.
If anyone can help I'd appreciate it.

I have made enquiries and the house numbering in Castlethorpe Road has not changed since 1950.

Thanks, Gerald, for your reply. I still can't resolve the issue of Malt Mill Lane being in the 1911 Tathall End census when Google maps shows Tathall End on the other side of Hanslope out east along Newport Road.

Indexes and transcripts are useful as finding aids, but they are seldom or never an adequate substitute for looking at the original records.

The drop-down menu on the website uses just six words to sub-divide the village: "Village Centre, Tathall End and Long Street".

This is clearly a significant reduction from the descriptions in the orginal records. These can be viewed on a number of websites. (One or other of findmypast.co.uk or ancestrylibrary.com are usually available free at public libraries).

Hanslope comprises Enumeration Districts 9 and 10 of the Olney Subdivision of the Newport Pagnell Division of Bucks.

The full description of ED10 as given in the original ED summary book reads:
All that part of the Civil Parish of Hanslope consisting chiefly of outlaying Farms and Cottages as described in detail below. Comprising Newport Road (from the Feoffee School) Woad Farm and Cottage Yewtree Lodge, Tathall-End, Park Farm, Hanslope Park Park Lodge, New Buildings, Leamington Cottages, Hatton Court, Hatton Court Lodge, Bullington End, Manor Farm, Ivy Farm, Park Road (from the Vicarage) Cuckoos-Hill, Malt Mill Lane, Rectory Farm Cottages, Milford ??? & Cottage, Lincoln Lodge and Cottage Hungate End Grange Farm, Pindon-End Farm and Cottage Gordons Lodge Whitings Farm, Higham Cross, Steam Mill Badgers Balney and Green-End.

So the census itself does not say that Malt Mill Lane is in Tathall End. I suspect that it is the reduction from around 100 words in the census to the 2 in the menu on the website that has mislead you.

Thank you for your explanation, Andrew. I must admit that this particular census is one that I have not done a search for the original records. I have nearly 60 copies of actual census returns for this branch of the family alone and admit I was just hoping not to have to travel the 50 kms to view the last few returns. We are very lucky as the town we live near in Queensland is one of the few regional libraries that I have visited that has free access to Ancestry census records. Even a couple I visited in Brisbane do not have such access. I'll not be so lazy in future.
Thanks for the reminder to seek out the originals.
Regards
Denise
