When my paternal ancestors Benjamin BISSELL and Sarah Ann COX married at Hanslope in November 1866 the witnesses were a Daniel RAINBOW and a Charlotte RAINBOW.

I've long wondered what their relationship was to the happy couple - maybe friends, maybe neighbours, maybe relatives....

I've researched the family of John RAINBOW (born Yardley Hastings) and Ellen (nee DRAPER) who arrive in Sherington between 1841 and 1851 (these are on the maternal side of my family tree) and can find no connection so far between the Hanslope RAINBOW family and the Sherington RAINBOWs.

So has anyone researched the Hanslope RAINBOWs?

Does anyone know of any connection between the Hanslope BISSELLs and/or COXs and Daniel and Charlotte RAINBOW?

I'd love to know!

My ancestor, Richard Slade, left £100 to John Rainbow of Hanslope. Richard's will was dated 3/11/1852 and "proved in London on 25/11/1854. Richard had a daughter, Charlotte. I wonder if there could be a connection?

I do not believe the Rainbows have any connection with the Cox family.

When I looked at the Hanslope registers back in the 1960s, I noted that the father of Sarah Ann Cox, Joseph Cox, was described as a labourer OF HARTWELL. (This does not appear in the transcript).

There is a Joseph Cox / Sarah Ann Cox pairing in the 1861 census for Hartwell (RG9-927-49-1) in which her age is given as 12, and Sarah Ann reappears (as Bissell) in the 1871 census for Wolverton (RG10-1475-22-36) in which her age is given as 23. So I deduce that her real age at marriage must have been about 17-18 and not 20 as shown in the register.

I have never attempted to trace Joseph Cox's ancestry, but it may have connected with the Coxes of Hanslope at some earliier date - perhaps you have already researched that line?

Thanks, I have knew her father was "of Hartwell", presumably to differentiate the family from the Hanslope Coxes.

1882 newspaper cutting "Charlotte Rainbow was charged with hawking without a licence at Aylesbury on 31st May" - may be a totally different Charlotte of course.

There was a John Rainbow, Gas Stoker, born abt 1867, who married Elizabeth Kilpen, with one child Philip age 3 recorded in 1901 census. They were living in Gold St, Hanslope at the time. Elizabeth's parents Edwin Kilpen and Sarah Robbins were married and lived in Hanslope from 1854.
