Post subject: 1880s Hanslope family photo album
PostPosted: 17 Jan 2009, 16:30
We have the family photo album of William Slade Higgins (1860-1888) of Stocking Green Farm, Hanslope and his wife, Emma (nee Gregory) born Castlethorpe 1863, died Hanslope 1939. They married in Hanslope in 1885. One son, William Thomas, born 1886.
After the early death of her husband Emma was licensee of The Swan Inn, Hanslope, where her parents, William and Mary Gregory - both born in Castlethorpe - were previous tenants.
Unfortunately none of the photographs have names attached to them. The only ones we are sure of are William Slade Higgins, Emma, and their son. As both came from large families the album must be full of photos of the Higgins, Gregory and probably the Slade(Green End Farm) families. Any suggestions or help on putting names to faces? Thanks.

The photographs from this album are now available on the Hanslope web site (http://www.mkheritage.co.uk/hdhs/images ... mit=Submit). ... site admin, 28 May 2009

We would be very interested to see your photographs. It will be difficult to identify people from the 1880s, but there are a group of older residents who's families go back several generations who might be able to help by comparison with their own photographs. Do any of the photographs provide good views of buildings?

If you can scan the photographs please email them to hdhs
@btinternet.com. Or if you are in the UK, please consider coming to the Church open weekend, 25, 26 July.

I was interested in your posting about Emma Gregory (married William Slade Higgins) as I had recently been looking into her parents, William Gregory (1838-1919) and Mary Brown (1837-1920). William Gregory was born in Castlethorpe, but moved to the Swan Inn in Hanslope probably between 1869 & 1871. William & Mary also ran the Bear Inn in Towcester in the 1890s before returning to Hanslope. Emma Gregory was the granddaughter of Joseph Gregory (1816-1881) and Ann Panter (c1817-1892) (my 3xg-grandparents).
I would be interested to see any photos of William, Mary & Emma, and the Swan Inn in Hanslope, but I'm sure I would be unable to help putting names to faces.

In response to the above replies; we will be contacting hdhs regarding the photographs.
We have had a museum expert date the photographs by the style of dress, usually more precise with female fashion, with some women dressed in mourning or half mourning (widowed in the last 12 months, or in 12-24 months) Also, as a large number of the photos are studio portraits taken in Northampton, and the dates that a photographer worked from a specific address in Northampton are well documented, we have been able to refine some photos down to a narrow time band, which does help a bit.
No buildings are shown in the photographs.

I also have connections to William Slade Higgins and Emma Gregory. I am tracing my Tooth family connections in Castlethorpe. Emma was the grandaughter of Mary Tooth and Stephen Brown.
Will we be able to view these photos? I am sure I am not the only one who is dying to see them!

I don't know if these are the same people, but I have notes on a Mary Gregory (DOB 14/1/1911) who was at Stony Stratford Council School (I have copies of her School reports for 1919 & 1920) - and also an Emma Gregory who appears to have been related to William and Mable Mason of Common Farm Calverton. I have a photo of William, Mable with Emma as a girl at Common Farm (which they moved away from after selling it in 1924) - see attached. Do any of these facts connect with your researches?

Thanks for the photo, but this is a different Emma Gregory to the one in our album who was born in 1863 and married in 1885.
Copies of all the album photos, about 70 of them, will be forwarded to HDHS in the near furure.

Hi, I would be very interested in seeing the photo of William Slade Higgins and his wife. I am a descendant of the Green End Farm Slades'. My line runs from William and Dorothy (Dawson) Slade. I also have a few Slade family pictures if anyone is interested.

We would like to add them to the Hanslope web site, if this is OK with you. If you can scan them, please forward images to hdhs@btinternet.com. Please also name people and places in the photographs wherever possible. Thanks

It would be lovely to compare photos and see if any of the faces match up. However we do presume that as Emma was widowed so soon after her marriage a lot of the album would concentrate on the Gregory side of the family. But as two Higgins brothers married two Slade sisters, and their farms were next door to each other, there will hopefully be some similarities.
William and Emma had a son William Thomas Higgins who emigrated to New Zealand in about 1914, where he practiced as an architect in Marton, Rangitiki, until returning to England in 1926. Quite a few of the Higgins family moved to NZ when agriculture in England was going through a depression in the late 1800s/early 1900s.
We have an email address for tracy-s.........nz that was asking about Wm Slade Higgins and Emma and The Swan Inn. But the address was no longer in use when we tried it. If this is you we are glad to make contact at last.
