I am researching my grandson's family history via Lois Stanton GREGORY and have arrived at Mary Ann Stonton or Stanton father William, who married Charles GREGORY.

But now I'm hoping to have some help to solve a dilemma. Can anyone please tell me whether this Mary is the daughter of William and Elizabeth or William and Amelia, and whether the Stanton and Stonton surnames are interhangable.

Charles Gregory was my 3 x Gt Grand Uncle, I have his wife Mary Ann Stonton as the daughter of William Stonton (1811-1891) and Amelia Brownsell (1815-1886)

Charles and Mary Ann married 29/7/1860 Hanslope.

The 1861 census shows William and Elizabeth Stanton's daughter Mary Ann as still residing at the family home, unmarried, age 23.

The Stonton/Stanton spelling is quite confusing, but in my records I have note saying William Stonton's father James StOnton married Widow Mary StAnton, so there may be some connection between the two spellings.

Many thanks for your very helpful reply. I hadn't been able to access the C1861 page on this site as it had been removed, nor could I find her on Ancestry, but after your message I went to findmypast, and there she was! Another mystery solved - with grateful thanks to you.
