Summary of Squire Watts' Funeral
as reported in The Wolverton Express - Friday July 26th, 1912 (Transcribed from the original held in Milton Keynes Museum) |
Local Comentary by "Woffler" Amid many manifestations of deep sympathy and respect, the funeral took place on Friday at Hanslope, of the late Mr. Edward Hanslope Watts J.P. whose tragic death evoked such widespread sympathy and sorrow. Mrs. Watts, who was prostrated by her harrowing experience at seeing her husband shot by the gamekeeper Farrow, was, fortunately, recovered sufficiently to be able to attend the funeral. The cremated remains of the late Squire, enclosed in a beautiful casket, were reverently placed in the family vault at Hanslope Church. The funeral service was conducted by the Bishop of Edinburgh (the Rev. Somerset Walpole), a relative of the squire, assisted by the Rev. Harry Trower (Vicar of Finmere) and The Rev. W. J. Harkness (Vicar of Hanslope). The obsequies were attended by many prominent people of Bucks. and Northants., and there was a large following of residents of Hanslope and the immediate neighbourhood. There was a magnificent collection of floral tributes. |
