The population of Hanslope Parish from census records.

|
The numbers above are summarised from the database created by Hanslope and District Historic Society. They include seven corrections to the totals compiled by the 19th century enumerators where the evidence is very clear that either a page was incorrectly totaled, or the sex of a person was wrongly recorded.
Although some data had been gathered in earlier years, 1841 was the first year in which the names of all residents were recorded. Slightly less data was gathered in 1841 than in later years. For instance, the relationships between members of a household were not recorded in 1841. For the later years the information recorded was similar until, in 1901, information was added on whether each person was an employer, worker or working on 'own account', and whether they were working from home.
For all census years, the age of each person was recorded, which makes it possible to estimate the year of birth, which is used in many of the searches. It should be noted however, that ages are not always correctly recorded. Furthermore, in 1841 the ages of most adults were recorded to the nearest 5 (25, 30, 35, etc.).
The census is recorded by what are called "schedules". These are referred to as "households" in the above table. The address of each house is not given; just the street, except for major properties such as farm houses, and public houses. The database created for Hanslope residents records the schedule number for each person. This is used to provide information on people living in the same household as the subject of an enquiry.
Copies of the original census returns are available on microfilm in reference sections of public libraries. Locally they are available in Milton Keynes and in Aylesbury.
Searching the census database
The census data can be accessed in two ways:
- By an initial search of the Master Index for a named person. This will result in a display of summaries of all references to the person. By clicking on a line that refers to a census return, a second display can be obtained of all the information transcribed from the census return, including a list of other members of the household the person belonged to.
- By requesting displays of transcripts of each census page.
The information displayed has been transcribed from hand written census returns. The quality of the source documents and the handwriting of the enumerators varies considerably. The information provided is the best interpretation our volunteers can make of the intentions of the enumerator. The site will be updated with corrections from time to time.
