The Romans were the first army in the world to use organised and effective standardised artillery. However, they were never particularly noted for inventing things themselves. And so it was with artillery. But they were masters at seizing a good idea and developing it to perfection for their own use. We will take an illustrated look at their various machines, their origins in ancient Greece and their development and implementation by the Roman army. So effective was Roman artillery that it left a legacy well into the early Middle Ages particularly in Byzantium.
