Saving a Century: A photographic exhibition celebrating the work of The Victorian Society

Monday 08 April 2013 2:43 PM

The Victorian Society's photographic exhibition Saving a Century, curated by architectural historian Gavin Stamp, will be on show free of charge at Luton Central Library from 3 - 30 April, seven days a week during Library opening hours.

This exhibition of photos from around the country shows examples of the best Victorian and Edwardian buildings and structures that the Society has campaigned to save, and some that have been lost. It demonstrates the Society's success in changing public attitudes towards the architecture of the nineteenth century, and its continued relevance for the twenty-first century.

The Victorian Society is the national charity campaigning for the Victorian and Edwardian historic environment.

Milton Keynes Festival of Christmas

Saturday 24 November 2012 1:44 PM

For the first time this year, the city's heritage organisations and partners are coming together to take Milton Keynes on a journey through the centuries - experiencing the sights, sounds, tastes and traditions of Christmas through the ages.

Highlights of the programme - which runs from 30 November - 16 December - include a medieval-themed Angels at the Abbey event at Milton Keynes City Discovery Centre on 2 December. Historians believe carolling first became popular in the middle ages, so there will be plenty of live festive song along with children's arts and crafts, seasonal tastes - and the chance to buy unique gifts and crafts.

In Olney, the Cowper and Newton Museum is hosting a heritage Christmas crafts day on 1 December where children will get the chance to make medieval pomanders, Victorian wrapping paper and WWII paper chains. And since hospitality was such a big part of Georgian Christmases, the Museum will be offering punch and judy shows, hot chocolate, spiced tea and mince pies as part of the town's Dickens Day on 9 December.

Staying with the Victorians, Milton Keynes Museum's ever-popular Victorian Christmas runs over three weekends from the end of November through to 16 December. The whole family can look forward to mulled wine and a candlelit sing song around the piano in the parlour, chestnuts in the forge, refreshments in the street of shops, Christmas crafts in the schoolroom, an array of present-buying opportunities from the Christmas fair - plus the chance to meet Santa in his grotto and Queen Victoria.

There are more present-buying opportunities at Bletchley Park on 8-9 December when West Bletchley Council's buzzing Christmas market returns to the home of the World War Two codebreakers. This year the partners are aided and abetted by Milton Keynes College students taking over the Mansion house to showcase their skills. Far from making do and mend, there'll be plenty of gifts and goodies to eat on display.

MK Rose workshop on 28 September

Tuesday 18 September 2012 8:52 PM
MK Rose logo

MK Rose

Milton Keynes is growing and maturing to meet the needs of its communities and visitors. One element yet to be developed is a central gathering place for celebration, contemplation and commemoration. MK Rose is the creative and engaging response to this need.

Designed by internationally renowned artist Gordon Young it is a vast and impressive civic space to be located in Campbell Park. The circular design is inspired by the original city centre design principals and the mathematical properties of a flower.

MK Rose includes a calendar of days represented by over 100 granite pillars. These pillars will be inscribed with dates and events which are important to you and Milton Keynes, and this is where we need your ideas. Through workshops we hope to identify key dates that you believe should be part of the MK Rose - dates that will engage people for many years in individual and group celebration, contemplation and commemoration.

Workshops date: 28th September - Heritage focus - MK Museum, 10am - 12noon.

If you would like to come to this session please email arts@milton-keynes.gov.uk. For more information about the workshops please visit the website: www.mkrose.co.uk.

MK Rose is a partnership project between the Cenotaph Trust and Milton Keynes Parks Trust with support from Milton Keynes Council.
