OA new year ! How suggestive the little words are of fresh hope, fresh thankfulness fresh efforts. A new year for our Magazine, a new year for ourselves. As for our Magazine, it is most satisfactory to understand that it has prospered and enlarged its sphere of usefulness in the past year, and gathers in more parishes for the new one. Some of us had failed to imagine at first how acceptable the new messenger would be in many homes, and what an interest it would stir in our neighbours’ activities equally with our own. Well, we may really believe it is doing a good work,, and ought heartily to pray that it may carry many a thought of truth and peace to the hearts of its readers in its progress through 1894.

A new year for ourselves! That is what of course concerns us most, and oh that we could apprehend all that it means for each one-new opportunities of good, new risks of failure, new calls of self denial and brotherly kindness. We are expecting this year to have introduced to our village and spread about it a runnel of pure water, sufficient for all needs of health and cleanliness. May it soon fulfil all the hopes of those who have been longing for it. But it is suggestive of a greater need, and of the means of supplying it well within the reach of us all, had we but the faith to seek it for ourselves and our families. Let us look out in our Bibles S. John iv 13 and 14, and vii. 37 and 38, and ask for help to understand the holy words, and so have our share in the “Living stream, as crystal clear, welling from out the Throne.”

Not withstanding the rainy weather which compelled us to muster in the drawing-room instead of the garden, as originally proposed, we have lately had two pleasant and successful meetings in Walton Rectory. On June 13, a company of about thirty neighbours assembled to hear Mr. Lang’s interesting lecture on the Archbishop’s Mission to the Assyrian Christians, and contributed £3 8s. 6d. to its funds. Altogether £11 14s 0d., has already been remitted by our Local Branch in aid of this mission. On July 16, a very full meeting was held in the same road, under the presidency of the Bishop of Reading, on behalf of the Additional Curates’ Society. Our zealous Local Secretary, the Rev. D, Elsdale, had obtained the help also of two excellent advocates, the Revs, Turner and Everitt from London, and the very satisfactory amount of £6 17s 2½ d. was collected in response to their pleading. Other collections made in the Rural Deanery on the 15th brought the whole contribution up to £10 9s 9 and a half pennies. A deficit of £15,000 in their funds last year calls for special efforts on behalf of the A.C.S. in the present year.

On Saturday , June 1, we laid in the grave the earthly remains of our oldest inhabitant 86, Rebecca Goodman. A communicant of many years standing, she was one of those who really love the Church and rely upon their Lord. In latter years she became so deaf, that she could not hear a single word of the church service, and yet when there was a late celebration of the Holy Communion, she was sure to be seen in her place, as long as she was able to walk thither. When she could no longer accomplish this some four years before her death, she always gave her sixpence for the offertory to a friend, whom she charged never to tell of her offering, so long as she lived, and a little before she died, she put a shilling in his hand, bidding him offer it for her, for fear a sixpence might have been forgotten. These offerings of hers were quite unknown even to her Pastor till after her death. She sank away at last most gently and peacefully, simply from old age, with children and grandchildren round her, and her last words to her old friend and pastor, were uttered with a happy smile, “I am going home.” So He giveth His beloved sleep.
