Located in the heart of historic market town of Buckingham, the Old Gaol was built in 1748 in the style of a castle, with later additions in 1839 by the famous local architect George Gilbert Scott. It is one of the key visitor attractions of Buckingham.
The purpose-built prison now tells the story of Buckingham and rural life in the fascinating museum, including the new Flora Thompson Collection and Buckinghamshire Military Trust exhibits. A number of the original cells still remain and form part of the museum visitor's experience.
The Old Gaol Museum, Gift Shop and Tourist Information Centre are open Monday - Saturday 10am - 4pm all year round. Last admission to the museum is half an hour before closing. Special July Sunday opening: Open Sunday 18th and Sunday 25th 10am to 2pm. Museum entry: £3.00 adults, £1.50 children, under fives free. Special family ticket - £7.50 (2 adults/2 children). We are open as normal during our stone work repairs being undertaken in July and August - please excuse our external appearance!
