Located in the heart of Buckingham, the Old Gaol was built in 1748 in the style of a stone castle, with later additions in 1839 by the local architect George Gilbert Scott. The purpose-built gaol now tells the story of Buckingham and rural life in the fascinating museum, including the new Flora Thompson room. A number of the original cells still remain.

Please note that the Museum is closed during our refurbishment project and is scheduled to re-open 11 July 2009. The Gift Shop and Tourist Information Centre remain open to visitors.

The Museum and the Tourist Information Centre are open Monday - Saturday 10am - 4pm all year round. Sunday opening in July & August 1pm - 4pm. Last admission to the museum is half an hour before closing.

    • Museum entry: £3.00 adults, £1.50 children, under fives free. Special family ticket - £7.50 (2 adults/2 children).

    • Join Buckingham Heritage Trust to obtain free entry for the year together with other useful benefits. Click here for details.

    • Groups and school visits are welcome by appointment - please call 01280 823020 for details.

    • Wheelchair and pushchair access by lift to the covered exercise yard and terrace.

    • Convenient long and short term parking is free and can be found in the 'Waitrose' Car Park off the High Street in Cornwalls Meadow. It is a short walk through Meadow Row to the Old Gaol. On street parking is available, but is limited in daytime to 20 or 30 minutes. A taxi rank is outside the front door.

    • The Old Gaol is a two-minute walk from the town centre bus stop served by the regular Milton Keynes/Bletchley 32 route and Aylesbury/Winslow 60 route. The X5 Cambridge to Oxford Stagecoach express stops on the bypass at the Tesco/Travelodge roundabout and is around a 20-25 minute stroll into the town centre.

The Old Gaol is a registered museum, one of the Milton Keynes Heritage Group of museums and was awarded Jewels of Milton Keynes status. The building is operated by Buckingham Heritage Trust - a registered charity.

The Old Gaol, which is one of the main tourist attractions in Buckingham, needs volunteers to assist in the Cell Shop or Museum. If you have three hours to spare each week or month, we would like to hear from you. Please contact us on 01280 823020 or call into the Museum during opening hours.

Please note that the website is being upgraded during spring 2009. If you find any errors, or would like to see any additional information please let the website editor know.
