Buckingham Heritage Trust was formed in 1985 with the
aims of acquiring, restoring and developing the Old Gaol as a museum for
the town of Buckingham. It is a registered charity (No. 292807) and a company
limited by guarantee (No. 1950221). The Trust acquired the building from
Aylesbury Vale District Council and restored it with grants from English
Heritage and Buckingham Borough Development Company. With the support of
the District and Town Councils, the Trust raised funds to establish the Museum,
which opened in 1993. In 1998, the Museum achieved official Registration
status, No 188.
Since 1993, the Trust has continued to expand and develop
the Museum. The Heritage Lottery Fund helped with the achievement in 2000
of the construction of a glass roof over the original prisoners' exercise
yard.
With the help of Aylesbury Vale District Council, the
Trust runs a busy Tourist Information Centre (TIC) with a booking service
for accommodation, National Express and other coaches and theatres. The Trust
receives no subsidy, all revenue coming from admission charges to the Museum,
rental of offices, donations, profits from the shop and grants.
The Trust also leases the Chantry Chapel, owned by the
National Trust and one of the oldest buildings in the town. The Chapel can
be hired for meetings - enquiries to the Old Gaol.
The Buckingham Heritage Trust is looking for people to
join the Trust by taking advantage of a specially reduced subscription rate
of £5 for 12 months. It is hoped that some of these people will take
an active interest in promoting the venue and will also come up with new
ideas to draw crowds and increase revenue. We want people who will help sort
out funding, run exhibitions, acquire new artefacts for exhibition and help
support the development of studies into local history.
