Charles Stephens - Biographical Notes
Charles was born in Wolverton in 1916, where he was educated. He trained to be a teacher at Chester Diocesan Training College, and began teaching in 1937. This was interrupted by his war service. He married Doris in 1942.
After the war he taught locally and was deputy head of Wolverton Junior School for 10 years. In 1956 Charles became headmaster of Sherington Junior School where he developed and built up its reputation as a good family unit.
Although he had no formal art training other than a college course in arts & crafts, Charles took his enthusiasm for art into all his school teaching, encouraging children in design , handicraft and free abstract. He became well known in educational circles for this.
After retirement in 1976 he expanded into other medium rather than the usual watercolour and he experimented in pastel and acrylics and also produced a number of calligraphy texts.
Charles discovered tapestry work after experiencing some ill health at 75, and continued with this hobby, completing his final picture a few months after his 90th birthday.
