Martin Williams - Biographical Notes (1)
Martin Williams was born in Staffordshire in 1957. He studied at Leicester Polytechnic where he gained a B.A. (Hons) Degree in graphic design. This led to a period of several years working as an art director for a number of leading advertising agencies in London. He subsequently moved to the academic world becoming a lecturer in graphic design and illustration. His home has been in Sherington for the last eighteen years where he lives with his wife and son. He now devotes his life mainly to equestrian art and has built up an international reputation, with his paintings featuring in private collections throughout the world. Unusually for an equine artist, he has no background in horses whatsoever. A chance visit to Fakenham races while in Norfolk for the Easter holidays provided the initial inspiration. Martin has exhibited as far afield as Europe, Japan and the United States. And he is noted for effective manipulation of light, colour and tone.

After a career in the creative departments of several major London based advertising agencies, Martin moved to Sherington in 1988 and began his painting career.
Until 4 years ago equestrian subject matter dominated Martin’s output. He won many awards at the Society of Equestrian Artists annual exhibitions at Christies in London. These included the best oil painting, best sporting art and culminating in 2000 with the Cuneo Medal for the most meritorious group of works. Martin’s work is now in the collections of numerous jockeys, owners and trainers throughout the world.
In 2002 a successful one man exhibition at the Osborne Studio Gallery in Belgravia confirmed Martin’s status as one of the countries leading equestrian artists.
His work has diversified since then, working on a string of commissions for a variety of clients including a number of large orchid paintings for the Cunard / P & O liner ’Arcadia’.
Martin has also exhibited in the U.S. Japan and on the continent.
Following a successful Sherington themed exhibition in 2001, which also raised £1,000 for Sherington based causes, Martin is planning a second exhibition entitled ‘Sherington Travels’ on the 29th October 2006 in Sherington Village Hall.
