SHS Meeting Minutes 40

Pump

Sherington Historical Soc.

Committee Meeting 7-30pm Feb.4th.

24 School Lane.

Present: Norman Arnold, Mark Vale, Sheila Quinn and Pearl Teasdale

  1. MKCVO Car Raffle: 115 groups participated in selling raffle tickets resulting in a gross sale of £50,410. The car was won by a lady from Loughton Lodge. We will receive £122.as our share, Selling 244 tickets)
  2. HUB UK: Norman, Mark and Sheila have attended two meetings organised by MKHA to discuss the proposed Milton Keynes Heritage facility. It is in the early consultation stages at present and two main sites were suggested; a) part of a new building to be erected on the present John Lewis carpark b) within the new complex to be build adjacent to the Point which will house the new Civic Offices and the relocated library. Of the two, SHS expressed a preference for the latter as we think that the Heritage Centre and the Library would be of benefit to each other. Whilst supporting the centre, SHS would not have anything to contribute to artefact exhibits. A separate file has been set up to monitor this project.
  3. MERCERS FARM: Norman and Philip Smith have had a meeting with Michael Cook. Michael has had extensive consultations with English Heritage and Brian Giddings of CMK planning dept. (Old and listed buildings advisor) and a set of architects plans has been produced which everyone is happy with. The front aspect cannot be changed except for the removal of the front door! Mrs. Cook had the present front entrance made, the original being to the side of the building. This alteration is being made and some "comparatively modern" work to the rear is also to be demolished and rebuilt. The new front entrance is to in a courtyard at the rear of the building. The outbuildings behind the house will become garages. Michael is happy for Norman to keep a photographic record of the progressing work.
  4. NEWPORT PAGNELL PHONEBOOK: There are two articles in the Newport Pagnell Phonebook this month featuring Sherington. Philip Smith has pointed out some mistakes in the article entitled. The second article is about the School. We are also named Website of the month.
  5. FILM to VIDEO: Oliver Powell has now transferred 5 of Peter Gardner’s films to CD form. The committee expressed agreement that the Society were getting a more "tailor made" product than if we had used a commercial company for the work (not to mention the cost!).
  6. JANUARY DINNER: It was felt that the January dinner had been a huge success and should be repeated in 2005. Thanks were expressed for the organisation of the dinner by Kay and Oliver. Pearl suggested that next year the Society could pay for table wine.
  7. Notelets. After the abject failure of venture into the marketing of yearly calendars, SAQ suggested trying 'Sherington ' notelets. A series based again on the Edith Lucas watercolours. Norman promised to submit a set of 'Doodles for the next meeting.
