SHERINGTON (calIed in Domesday Book "Serintone") is a small parish and village, on the road from Newport Pagnell to Olney, 3 miles from the latter, and 2 from the former, 11 from Bedford, and 6 from the Wolverton station on the London and North Western Railway, in the hundred, union, county court district and rural deanery of Newport PagnelI, archdeaconry of Buckingham, and diocese of Oxford. The church of St. Laud the Martyr (whose festival is celebrated on September the 21st, which is also St. Matthew's Day,) is seated on an eminence, and is of Gothic architecture, with square tower and small spire. The living is a rectory, annual value £631, with residence, in the patronage of the Bishop of Oxford, and held by the Rev. Alexander King, M.A., of Oriel College, Oxford; the Rev. John Pickford, M.A.., of Queen's College, Oxford, is curate. The Mercers' Company of the city of London have property here. A reading society for the working classes is held in the village. Here are chapels for the Independents and Wesleyans. The population in 1861 was 839; the acreage is 1,780.
