In late 2005 and early 2006 some members of the Towcester and District Local History Society made a complete inventory of the burials and memorial stones in the oldest part of Towcester Cemetery, Brackely Road, Towcester. The registers were copied and transcribed, the plot numbers were identified, the memorial stones were photographed and their inscriptions transcribed and illegible data was checked against other sources.

To read this inventory click on one of the links below. The information is available by name, serial number or burial plot. If there is more information, such as a photograph, a link is provided next to the entry.

The burials were listed in three register books which are now kept at the Northamptonshire Record Office. The earliest burial recorded in the registers was in December 1885 and the most recent in September 1939. The page reference has been identified by two numbers, the first being the register book number and the second the page within that register book. The registers include an unique serial number for each burial, starting with "1" in 1885. Where a plot is identified in the register it is given location coordinates consisting of a letter and a number in the form "A-99".Some of the doubtful register entries have been verified against the 1881 and 1901 census.

The registers are not accurate. Entries and parts of entries are missing; there are discrepancies in spelling and in names; serial numbers have sometimes been accidentally repeated; plot numbers have sometimes been omitted and the writing is not always clear. Also the inscriptions on the gravestones do not always match the entry in the registers. And some of the smaller memorials, such as flower pots, are not always near the related plot.

In the registers the word "labourer" is sometimes spelt "labourer" and sometimes "laborer"; the anglicised spelling has been used here. But the various spellings in the registers have been preserved for the village near to Towcester called "Caldecote", the forename "Harriet" and the surname "Causebrook".

Still born babies and babies a few hours old are sometimes marked in the register as being buried in row R, at the western edge of the old part of the cemetery. More usually - in over 140 cases - the burial plot has been omitted from the register.

Another complication is that in 1936, when a new section of the cemetery was opened, the rows of plots were labelled from A again (A,B,C,D,E,F) with the same letter as plots in the old part of the cemetery. Unfortunately this means that there is no way of telling from the register whether such burials are in the old part of the cemetery or the new part. For this web site the assumption has been made that burials after 1936 in rows A to F are in the new part of the cemetery; these rows have been labelled with lower case letters (a,b,c,d,e,f) to distinguish them, although the entries in the register are all in upper case.

The same data is presented three times, sorted by surname, by date and by plot. Where there is additional information, such as an inscription or a photograph or a plot location within the cemetery a link has been provided.
