Towcester Town Hall

Towcester Rate Book 1855

The information in this section comes from a rating assessment of every property in Towcester made in 1855 by the poor law union. A copy of the assessment was identified among documents from the Fermor-Hesketh family by Philip Riden during his work on the Victoria County Histories.

A slip index was made of the rate book by members of an evening class run by Philip Riden at the Northampton Record Office, and the information was then entered in a computer data base by Margaret Webb. The rate book forms part of the rating assessment; the other part is a map in which the parcels of land are numbered to match entries in the rate book. The original rate book and map are now both in The Northampton Record Office.

More information can be found in the book "Towcester Tenements - A Survey of the Victorian Town" by Philip Riden and Margaret Webb, Merton Priory Press, 2000, ISBN 1-898937-44-3.

In this web site the details of each building in the rate book have been repeated three times;

  • sorted by parcel number
  • sorted by the occupiers name
  • sorted by the owner's name
