About the Towcester and District Local History Society
The Society, founded in 1982, has the aims of advancing the understanding and knowledge of local history; promoting publications and articles; and holding exhibitions and similar related activities.

Meetings are held on the second Wednesday of the month (except August) at 7.30pm, at the Riverside Centre. Islington Road, Towcester, Northamptonshire, NN12 7AU, when talks are given on a variety of topics relating to our local heritage. Visitors are welcome at all meetings.
  • A regular newsletter is produced quarterly and distributed to all paid up members.
  • Visits to places of interest, both local and further afield, are organised.
  • Guided walks are offered around Towcester to visiting groups.
  • Regular contacts are maintained with other Local History Societies.
  • The history of Towcester's people, buildings and organisations is researched.
  • Lists of interest to Family History researchers are maintained.
The Society has about 100 members and is an active member of the Northamptonshire Association for Local History [NALH], and also the British Association for Local History [BALH]; the Association of Small Historic Towns and Villages [ASHTAV]; the Milton Keynes Heritage Association [MKHA]; the Community Landscape & Archaeology Survey Project [CLASP] and the Council for British Archaeology [CBA] South Midlands Group.

Projects include:
  • Practical hands-on archaeology in the Towcester area in conjunction with CLASP, the Community Landscape and Archaeology Survey Project.
  • The first phase of installation of plaques on historic buildings in Towcester.
  • The restoration of the Roll of Honour in St Lawrence's Church.
  • The study of the 120 year old handwritten diary of William White.
  • The recording of all the inscriptions in old part of Towcester Cemetery.
  • A study of the buildings and people in Towcester in 1855 based on a rating map and document.
  • A study of Towcester in 1916-1924 based on some documents that were given to the society.
  • A study of the history of Towcester Castle (Bury Mount).
In addition the Society offers
  • Rambles in the countryside around Towcester.
  • Guided walks of nearby villages.
  • Guided walks of Towcester.
  • Recording of building development.
  • Visits to archaeological digs.
  • Opportunity for hands-on archaeology.
  • Coach trips to places of historic interest.
  • Social events at Christmas and in the summer.

Events are announced at Society meetings, and paid up members can receive email notification of events of interest.
