Transport Day 2003

at Milton Keynes Museum

Sunday 21 September saw the annual Transport Extravaganza at Milton Keynes Museum. Over a hundred classic vehicles of many makes attended, including an extrensive collection of motorcycles, commercial vehicles, classic cars, and three double decker buses.

The Telephone Museum's 1952 Morris 'Z' engineers van was on display, as was a second privately-owned 1948 'Z' with Guildford area markings. Vehicles donated to MK Museum by BT under the Connected Earth partnership were grouped together. The 1950 Morris Commercial one-ton truck and trailer, resplendent in their original green livery, joined the 1977 Pole Erection Unit adjacent to the Museum's Hall of Transport.

The third Connected Earth vehicle, the Roadphone, was also on display and during the day was used by visitors as a working telephone! Another privately-owned ex-P.O. vehicle, a 1980 Bedford HA engineers van, resplendent in the yellow livery and markings of the period, completed the display.

The Telephone Museum building was busy all day as visitors sampled the working Strowger UAX13 and plug and cord switchboards. The A + B boin box assembly was as popular as ever, and a samll display of early mobile phones donated to MK Museum through its BT Connected Earth partnership also proved popular.
