TELEPHONES
Also known as 'Subscribers Instruments'.

In addition to the telephones connected through the UAXs, the mobile exchange and the switchboards, the Museum has on display a wide range of telephones from around 1900 to the 1980's.
These are changed from time to time, but usually include a small group of wooden magneto wall telephones and one table model.


A 'skeleton' type no.16
WW2 black base with green handset 'Scrambler telephone with two large frequency changer units as used by Churchill on the 'hot line' to President Roosevelt in USA to reduce the risk of eves- dropping by the enemy.

  • Army field telephones, some with Morse tappers.
  • Engineers Test telephones.
  • Brighton's 400,000th telephone. (Telephone No. 746 )
  • Working House Exchange Systems used in small offices and large houses for internal communication.

Many of these items appear frequently on TV programmes.

The Museum offers a Historical Telecommunications Consultancy Service to the TV and Film Industry.
