Resources for study of the local impact of the Great War
(You can find links to national websites on our Links page. The national WFA site has many resources for schools, listed by Key Stage.)
On this site:
- The Local Heroes feature has:
- accounts of three men born locally who emigrated to countries in the (then) Empire, and returned to Europe to fight during the Great War - their names are on local War Memorials.
- an account of the difficulty of finding out about Private F. Nicholls, from Bletchley whose grave was found in a French cemetery - he is not mentioned on any local war memorials.
- In the Miscellany section there are a number of items that may be of interest:

The British Legion Battle Field Pilgrimage 1928.
Read the guide book here. This was the first BL Pilgrimage. The book was passed to me by WFA MK member, Harry Canvin.
I asked the BL for their agreement to publish this here - they have not had the courtesy to reply, so I consider I have done all I need to do. |

On other local sites:
Other local websites also have useful information about the experience of the Great War in the Milton Keynes area:
- Echoes of the Great War: this presents materials gathered for an exhibition at Stantonbury linked to a produciton of "Oh What a Lovely War!". There are lots of examples of the Great War in the family histories of people now living locally. There are also two features about events in Wolverton during the War (access them from the home page of the Echoes site):
- The McCorquodales Strike
- The Ambulance Train
- The Living Archive, in particuluar:
- Days of Pride about life in New Bradwell at that time, as told by Hawtin Mundy, who fought in the Great War.
