8. Glazing Bars

Victorian and Edwardian sash windows have a great variety of glazing bars. These are the wooden struts that hold the glass in place. Check with preserved sash windows in your terrace for the right patterns.
A few sash windows have what is called margin glazing, with coloured plass or patterned coloured glass in the margins. They will have square corner panels, which may have glass with a sunburst or star pattern. Glazing bars look best painted in soft white or cream, not brilliant white which is a modern colour.
