|LANCE CORPORAL HAROLD MATHEWS
Died 21st September 1918
The son of Thomas, a carpenter, and Ann, Harold was formerly no. 9843 of the Yorkshire Light Infantry and had also spent time with the 182nd Tunnelling Company, Royal Engineers.
A piece from the “Beds Times” of 24th December 1915:
“Pte H. Mathews, 19849, 182 Tunnelling Co. RE, France, writes on Dec. 15th:-
Harold is listed on the Vis-en-Artois Memorial, Pas de Calais. This memorial holds the names of 9000 allied soldiers who fell between August 8th 1918 and the end of the war, and have no known grave. Listed on the Woburn Sands Memorial. His army service papers have not survived.
