1831 Militia Ballot

In 1831, the Parish Constable was required to compile a list of all males between the ages of 18 and 45 who were liable to be called up to serve in the Militia. Each parish had to provide a certain number of men, who were chosen from the list by ballot. Those in certain occupations were exempt. In addition, those with children were only selected if there were too few without children to meet the quota. The list was published prior to the ballot, with a right of appeal.
