Family History

We have quite a good collection of general books on the subject of genealogy and guides on how to do your research and where to find more information. We have a few Buckinghamshire transcribed parish registers and census returns, but most of them are on microfilm.

Useful holdings for the family historian include the following:

The International Genealogical Index (IGI) or the 'Mormon Index' is on microfiche and covers the whole of the British Isles.

The 1881 Census is available for England and Wales on microfiche, but the 1881 Census on CD-Rom covers Scotland as well.

The General Register Office (GRO) index of Births, Marriages and Deaths from 1837 to 1996 is on microfiche and covers England and Wales.

Other useful records include the Vital Records Index, and 'Soldiers Died in the Great War 1914-1919', both on cd-rom.

There are more holdings for genealogists tracing their Buckinghamshire ancestors.

We hold most of the County's parish registers and Bishops Transcripts that have been microfilmed, and all of the 1841-1901 Censuses covering Buckinghamshire parishes. Click here for details about the Parish Registers and Bishops Transcripts held here

Vouchers are available in £5 or £10 units to access the 1901 Census on the Internet.
