81. GERANIUM PHAEUM ALBA White Cranesbill
The white form of the above, useful for lightening shady areas. 2ft Sun/shade

82. GERANIUM SANGUINEUM ALBUM White Bloody Cranesbill
The white flowered native plant with dark green foliage. H1ft Sun/shade

83. GERANIUM TUBEROSUM
From Southern Europe in the sixteenth century. Grown by Gerard. Pink H2" Sun or shade NOTE: foliage dies back after flowering. Corms need winter protection.

84. GEUM RIVALE Wild or Water Avens
Native wildflower with coppery-pink nodding bell flowers in early summer. H1ft Sun/shade

85. HEDERA ALGARIENSIS GLOIRE DE MARENGO Ivy
Cream-edged leaves, splashed with sage green and dark green. H10ft Sun/shade

86. HEDYSARUM CORONARIUM French Honeysuckle
It is recorded that seeds of this plant were sown on 6th April 1639. Sloan MS95, f.153 Rosy pea-like flowers in summer. Can be cut down by frost, but reappears next spring, if winter not too severe.

87. HELIANTHEMUM Rock rose
Native to Europe, the Latin name comes from the Greek, meaning sun-flower as it dislikes shade. Low growing evergreen sub-shrubs, liking hot dry places and flowering for most of the summer. H1ft. Sun

88. HELICHRYSUM ANGULOSUM Curry plant
So named because of the very aromatic silvery foliage. Golden button flowers in summer. H1.5ft Sun

89. HELLEBORUS CORSICUS ARGUTIFOLIUS
Long lasting apple green flowers appear in this garden as early as February. The toothed leaves remain attractive thoughout the summer. H1.5ft. Sun/shade.

90. HELLEBORUS FOETIDA Stinking Hellebore Stinkwort
Pale green flowers in February through to Spring. The finely cut leaves continue to look attractive. Self seeds abundantly! H1.5ft Sun/shade

91. HESPERIS MATRONALIS Sweet Rocket
Grown in cottage gardens since the 16th century. Mauve or white flowers. H3ft Sun/shade

92. HUMULUS LUPULUS AUREUS Golden Hop
An attractive form of the native hop. Humulus comes from the Latin humus meaning ground, as unsupported stems trail along the ground (and root!). The female form has the hops. H15ft Sun/shade

93. HYACINTHUS Hyacinth
Parkinson grew several varieties including three doubles and the white Roman hyacinth. We felt we should plant this white hyacinth, called CARNEGIE, in acknowledgement of the great financial help the Carnegie Trust UK Trust has been in renovating this garden.

94. HYSSOPUS OFFICINALIS Hyssop
A Mediterranean native used as a herb in this country since the 13th century. It takes its name from the Hebrew word Azob, meaning 'holy plant', as it is mentioned many times in the Bible. Blue and pink forms. H2ft Sun

95. IBERIS SEMPERVIRENS Perennial Candytuft Evergreen Candytuft
Came from Persia in 1731. Snowy white flowers in early summer. H1ft Sun

96. IRIS FOETIDISSIMA Stinking Iris Gladwin Iris
A British native plant. The leaves smell of raw beef when crushed. Insignificant blue or yellow flowers in early summer followed by vivid red open seed pods. Will tolerate dry conditions. H2ft Sun/shade

97. IRIS GRAMINEA Iris Colchica
Introduced in 1597 from Central Europe Grassy foliage with low growing purple flowers. April/May H9" Sun

98. IRIS PALLIDA VARIEGATA Dalmatian Iris
From E. Europe and grown in Britain since 1580. Lilac blue fragrant flowers. Also grown for its white streaked foliage. May/June H2ft Sun

99. ISATIS TINCTORIA Woad Common Dyer's Weed
Native of Britain and used for centuries as a blue dye. Scented yellow flowers on erect stems in June. Biennial, but often perennial (self seeds!) Up to 5ft Sun

100. JASMINUM HUMILE Italian Jasmine
Introduced in 1656. A bushy evergreen shrub with yellow flowers. Fairly hardy. H4-5ft Sun
