Sorting the wools for kits

From September 2000 onwards, we developed a colour palette of wools comprising 50 colours. These 50 colours, and only these, were used throughout the tapestry.

The palette contained no primary colours, and no black or white.

The first kits to be developed were for the houses in the village. We took 'full frontal' photographs of the various properties, such as this one in the High Street.

From the photograph, we traced the outline, and copied it onto 16 hpi canvas.

Drawing of House

The appropriate colour wools from the colour palette were included in each kit together with:

  • a frame
  • a needle
  • a photograph of the property
  • canvas with the outline pencilled in
  • instructions for stitching and using the coloured wools.

By March 2001 we had about 20 kits ready but the stitchers were so keen, that the project committee was hard put to it to keep up with demand.

A husband of one of the stitchers, David Levine, made 40 frames for the kits, but with the enthusiasm of the stitchers we asked him for a further supply. We had over 60 frames out at a time with different house kits.
